After the annexation to the City of Calgary in 1970, the McKenzie Lake real estate market began in the 1980’s. The original homes in the community were completed in 1984 and then expanded in 1997. It is named after one of the first settlers in the local area, J. McKenzie.

The real estate market of Calgary, McKenzie Lake boasts unique estates worth millions of dollars. There are spacious luxury homes for sale at both the lakefront and the ridge. There are also starter and mid-range McKenzie Lake houses available for sale in the neighbourhood. Most homes are detached single-family units, but there are also elegant townhouses as well. The most exclusive properties are found on the private island of the lake. Amongst the major attractions for home buyers are the beautiful views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

The McKenzie Lake Residents Association provides further assistance to parents through pre-school care, after school programs, and other amenities. It offers dance classes, exercise classes, basketball and youth baseball programs. It organises a variety of events including dances and Christmas and New Year’s parties. Other activities that home buyers can enjoy within the neighbourhood include ice skating, martial arts and tennis. Nearby Fish Creek Park offers long pathways for walking and biking and excellent opportunities for swimming at Lake Sikome. There are several golf courses in close proximity to the community.

The major shopping hubs in the area surrounding McKenzie Lake include South Trail Crossing, which has a Walmart and a Co-op, and McKenzie Towne’s High Street, which is known for its great boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Shawnessy Towne Centre, Deerfoot Meadows and Southcentre Mall are just a short drive away from the neighbourhood and are another reason why the community is so popular with home buyers.

Students and their parents who purchase a home in McKenzie Lake can select from three schools located within the community. These include the public McKenzie Lake School and Mountain Park Middle School, and the separate K-9 Cardinal Newman School.
