University Heights Housing Market
The real estate market in University Heights began in 1963 and single-family houses built during that decade are the major home types in the University Heights community. Many of these structures have undergone renovations as well as remodeling over the years.
Quiet University Heights is sprinkled with single-family homes for sale, condominium units, and townhouses with 65% of the units as rentals. With 2,298 residents (as of the 2012 municipal census) living in 1,380 dwellings, the proximity to a hospital has made University Heights the preferred choice for university students and staff there as well as for healthcare professionals.
The boundaries of University Heights include Shaganappi Trail to the west, 16 Avenue N and the Trans-Canada Highway to the south, 24 Avenue N to the north, and University Drive to the east. This relatively small neighbourhood has the claim to fame that Prime Minister Stephen Harper lived in University Heights when he attended the UC.
University Heights Neighbourhood Amenities
Real estate development in University Heights coincided with the establishment of the university in the 1960’s. Residents of the University Heights community have easy access to Foothills Medical Centre, McMahon Stadium, the UC, Foothills Athletic Park and Burns Stadium via Crowchild Trail. The community, adjacent to the UC’s 184 acres of virtually open space, boasts being one of northwest Calgary’s best shopping locations.
Living in University Heights brings you close to several shopping venues including Market Mall, North Hill Centre, Northland Village Mall, Stadium Shopping Centre, Future Shop and Walmart amongst others. This is a great area offering convenient shopping for groceries, home furnishings, hardware, clothing, toys, footwear, and accessories.
The University Heights Community Association here is also an attraction for home buyers. Crafts and sports programs are not the only items on the agenda of the University Heights Community Association since residents are also treated to regular dances and the annual Stampede Breakfast. Although the community does not have its own centre, residents still enjoy baseball, soccer, and other activities at nearby facilities.
University Heights Local Schools
Several schools service University Heights homes including Banff Trail, Dalhousie, and University Heights Elementary School. Public junior high schools include Branton, Senator Patrick Burns and Queen Elizabeth Junior High School. Public high schools include William Aberhart and Queen Elizabeth High School and the former provides its students with immersion programs in French.
