The Hawkwood community is named after John and Joseph Hawkwood, who were the original landowners of the land where it sits. Real estate development began here in 1981, with great views of the Rocky Mountains. Today, its boundaries are defined by Country Hills Blvd, the Sarcee Trail, John Laurie Blvd, and Nose Hill Drive.

Aside from providing public wireless Internet, Hawkwood has also gained some recognition for the quality of its community schools. The Hawkwood Community Association is currently working on plans for a community center with casinos. It is also continuing its beautification efforts with the Landscape Enhancement and Appreciation Fund.
