Bearspaw is a hamlet that was originally owned by aboriginal groups before the first settlers or explorers arrived. By the early 1880’s, Bearspaw and its real estate market was seeing swift changes. The Canadian Pacific Railway was being developed to link eastern and western Canada, and was completed in 1909. Bearspaw comes from Chief Masgwaahsid, whose name meant “Bear’s Paw,” and he was the one that signed the treaty on September 22, 1877.
