Whitehorn is a part of The Properties residential area, which includes the neighbourhoods of Temple, Pineridge and Rundle as well. The area was annexed to the City of Calgary in 1961 and was formally established in 1973 when real estate development in the area began.

This low-density neighbourhood offers a great variety of homes for sale but most of the Whitehorn houses for sale are detached. Families buying a home in Whitehorn will find the community is served by three elementary schools including Chief Justice Milvain Elementary and St. Wilfrid Elementary. The Annie Gale Junior High School is also in the neighbourhood.
