The real estate market in the area where the community of Monterey Park lies was annexed to the City of Calgary in stages. The first one took place in 1979. The second one was in 1983 and the third one occurred in 1989. The community was established in 1985 and was named after the city of Monterey Park in California. This was a great name, as the neighbourhood’s design and architectural style are inspired by a Californian theme.

The neighbourhood has several shopping plazas with the Sunridge, Marlborough and Chinook malls just a short drive away. The downtown area with its great shops and restaurants can be reached with the LRT as well. There are 5 LRT train stations within 5 kilometres and the train trip from Monterey Park to downtown Calgary takes about 20 minutes. Home buyers in Monterey Park will find that there are schools for students of all ages just a few minutes away. The Monterey Park Elementary School has an excellent reputation and Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert Junior High School offers education from grades 7 to 9. Students in grades 10 to 12 can study at the Lester B. Pearson Senior High School.
