The Mount Royal housing market has a rich history. Upper Mount Royal used to be part of “American Hill,” as it was home to many rich American businessmen that had migrated to Canada. Over time, this name was dropped in favour of Mount Royal. Lower Mount Royal was annexed to Calgary in 1907. During the periods of 1904-1914, real estate development of the surrounding areas was escalating.

When considering Mount Royal homes for sale, buyers should look at the area as two separate communities. Upper Mount Royal is one of the city’s more luxurious places to live, with the vast majority of homes for sale being single-family detached properties with considerable price tags. In contrast, Lower Mount Royal is far more modest. Lower Mount Royal is still an incredibly desirable and high-sough after place to live, but unlike Upper Mount Royal, there is a larger selection of apartments and condominium properties to choose from.

Along with the vast public spaces and excellently-maintained roads and walkways, the community of Upper Mount Royal has plenty of amenities to offer home owners.

For shopping, nearby 17 Avenue offers a wide selection of shops and plazas and the Chinook Mall is only a short drive away, as are several other popular shopping destinations. For outdoor enthusiasts, the public land of Upper Mount Royal is excellently maintained, while numerous hiking and walking trails are easily accessible in the nearby parks. It’s no surprise that Upper Mount Royal continues to be so highly-rated by its residents, and continues to be a popular choice for people looking to buy a home in a neighbourhood that offers just a little bit more.

There is a wide selection of schools to choose from, including Maria Montessori School, Earl Grey School, Elbow Park School, Rideau Park School and Western Canada High School. Oddly enough, Mount Royal University is not located within the boundaries of the area but is just a short trip away.
