The history of Mission real estate dates back as far as 1883, when two Catholic priests by the names of Father Lacombe and Father Leduc set up areas of land that were intended to be self-sufficient. This area grew and a predominantly French community began to form. Originally the community was known as Rouleauville after two brothers that founded the Holy Cross hospital. By the time the area was annexed to the city of Calgary in 1907, however, the French community had waned and the area was renamed Mission. Currently, there is an area redevelopment plan in place for Mission with the intent of restoring and regenerating some parts of the community.

Today real estate in Mission is mainly comprised of apartment blocks and condominium buildings and has a population of roughly 4,500 people. Thanks to the number of high rise buildings in the area, it is considerably more densely populated than many of the outlying suburban areas of Calgary. In addition to the apartments and condominiums, there is also a small selection of detached, semi-detached and Mission townhomes in the vicinity.

One of the main benefits of purchasing a residence in Mission is the overwhelming access residents have to shopping facilities and amenities. On 4 Street and 17 Avenue you’ll run into a vast array of shops, cafes and restaurants while the central downtown area is just a short trip away. This central location coupled with the sheer volume of services and amenities in the immediate vicinity has made Mission a particularly attractive location for many young couples and young professionals that want to live and work in the city.

The Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association is also responsible for the creation of the 4 Street Lilac Festival. This festival has grown to become Calgary’s largest street festival. This inner city neighbourhood has grown from its roots as one that provided housing for Canadian Pacific Rail employees to a beautiful and vibrant community that combines the convenience of living in downtown Calgary with the benefits of an outdoor lifestyle.

Home buyers in Mission will find the neighbourhood well served by local schools. The most highly-attended schools include St. Mary’s Senior High School, St. Monica Elementary & Junior High School and Western Canada Senior High School. There is also ample public transportation for students that want to travel to adjoining areas for education purposes.
